On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the rousing celebration for him in Chicago Heights touched upon faith, family, politics and even Haiti.
The 13th annual event held in the civil rights icon's honor was hosted Monday evening at the Chicago Miracle Temple Church, 34 E. 16th St.
Residents from surrounding areas, as well as local politicians and city workers, showed up to honor King and his memory. Chicago Miracle Temple co-pastor Cheryl Anderson gave the opening remarks, giving thanks as she talked about her daughter's recent bout with meningitis. read more...

Chicago Heights' Christmas tree sprouts memories for Crete woman
Posted on 2009-12-28 16:09:50 CST
When Anna Mohr, of Crete, looks at Chicago Heights' official 2009 Christmas tree, she sees her life.
She should; they grew up together.
The 50-foot pine tree was planted for Mohr by her father about 55 years ago at the family's home in Chicago Heights.
"It was exciting for me to see something from my childhood make it to the big time," said Mohr, whose parents, Ervin and Margaret Batterman, moved into their house along Joe Orr Road around 1950. read more...

Chicago Heights issuing $8 million in bonds
Posted on 2009-11-18 09:34:07 CST
The Chicago Heights City Council is issuing about $8 million in bonds to extend an existing loan and to pay for road construction and improvements to the city's 911 call center.
City officials said a $3.9 million bond issue will allow the city to extend a portion of a loan from 1993 that was due to be paid off Dec. 1.
In 1993, the city issued bonds worth about $36 million. A total of between $15 million and $16 million is outstanding on that debt and the city originally planned to pay off $3.6 million of it Dec. 1. read more...

Greener tires get start in Chicago Heights

Rhodia's silica part of the wheel deal
To build a greener tire, some manufacturers are relying on a Chicago Heights factory that every year churns out tons of what vaguely resembles powdered sugar.
It's actually precipitated silica, and French chemical company Rhodia ships it to tiremakers, including Goodyear and Michelin. Used as a filler material, silica is mixed with the rubber to reduce a tire's rolling resistance.
"As the rolling resistance goes up, the engine has to work harder," Sam Agle, manager of the Chicago Heights plant, said. read more...

Aunt Martha's breaks ground on Chicago Heights dental clinic
Posted on 2009-10-07 10:07:42 CDT
Ground was broken Monday on a project that will expand dental services for the needy in Chicago Heights and other nearby suburbs.
The dental clinic, which will cost between $500,000 and $600,000, is being built at the Women's Health Center, 233 W. Joe Orr Road. The center is part of Aunt Martha's Healthcare Network.
Federal economic stimulus money and an $180,000 grant secured by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-2nd), of Chicago, will pay for the project.
Mayor Alex Lopez praised Aunt Martha's, calling the non-profit agency something the city needs most.
"Especially in this time where there's a battle in Washington D.C. about health care reform, Aunt Martha's provides it to families that need it the most," Lopez said. "Dental is one of those coverages that is always put on the back burner. It's something every family needs." read more...

Police residency rule on way out in Chicago Heights
Posted on 2009-09-29 10:40:36 CDT
The residency requirement that has kept Chicago Heights police officers living in the city since 1954 may soon be ending.
An arbitrator ruled last week that all new police officers must live in Chicago Heights for their first five years in the department. But after that, they can move as far as 20 miles away as long as they live in Illinois.
"If it were the city's decision, the residency rule would be intact as it has been since 1954," Chicago Heights chief of staff Matt Fares said.
"Both sides win a little bit but that little bit we won doesn't make me want to throw a party. If you are getting paid by city and taxpayers, you should be a part of the city. Plain and simple." read more...
