Chicago Heights firefighter Filippi dies

Posted on 2010-04-27 09:08:11 CDT

Chicago Heights Fire Capt. Brian Filippi's first gift to his daughter was her name.

"Because he named me such an unusual name, he gave me a huge gift in itself because I write and being a writer, your name means a lot to you," Hyacynth Filippi Worth said Monday of her dad.

Mr. Filippi, a lifelong Chicago Heights resident who started working as a firefighter-paramedic in 1981, died Saturday at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights due to septic shock, his family said. He was 56.

His wife, Judy, said her husband always had the city in his heart.

"He supported the city any way he could," she said. "He preferred to make all or any of his purchases in the city of Chicago Heights." read more...

Chicago Heights: On the way back up

Posted on 2010-03-08 16:42:30 CST

CHICAGO HEIGHTS | Shakespeare wrote of greatness that some are born to it, some achieve it and others have it thrust upon them.

When the City Council voted for Alex Lopez on April 30 to fill the vacancy left by Anthony DeLuca's departure for the state Legislature, the 43-year-old lifelong Chicago Heights resident became the first Hispanic ever to fill the post.

Though it did not come through a traditional election by the voters, the greatness of that vote was not lost on him.

"It's a historical moment," he said at time. "Within the community, we have a large number of Hispanic population. I've gotten a lot of feedback that so many people are proud to see the first Hispanic mayor."

Chicago Heights' Christmas tree sprouts memories for Crete woman

Posted on 2009-12-28 16:09:50 CST

When Anna Mohr, of Crete, looks at Chicago Heights' official 2009 Christmas tree, she sees her life.

She should; they grew up together.

The 50-foot pine tree was planted for Mohr by her father about 55 years ago at the family's home in Chicago Heights.

"It was exciting for me to see something from my childhood make it to the big time," said Mohr, whose parents, Ervin and Margaret Batterman, moved into their house along Joe Orr Road around 1950. read more...

Chicago Heights issuing $8 million in bonds

Posted on 2009-11-18 09:34:07 CST

The Chicago Heights City Council is issuing about $8 million in bonds to extend an existing loan and to pay for road construction and improvements to the city's 911 call center.

City officials said a $3.9 million bond issue will allow the city to extend a portion of a loan from 1993 that was due to be paid off Dec. 1.

In 1993, the city issued bonds worth about $36 million. A total of between $15 million and $16 million is outstanding on that debt and the city originally planned to pay off $3.6 million of it Dec. 1.

Greener tires get start in Chicago Heights

Posted on 2009-10-23 10:10:43 CDT

Rhodia's silica part of the wheel deal

To build a greener tire, some manufacturers are relying on a Chicago Heights factory that every year churns out tons of what vaguely resembles powdered sugar.

It's actually precipitated silica, and French chemical company Rhodia ships it to tiremakers, including Goodyear and Michelin. Used as a filler material, silica is mixed with the rubber to reduce a tire's rolling resistance.

"As the rolling resistance goes up, the engine has to work harder," Sam Agle, manager of the Chicago Heights plant, said. read more...

Food 4 Less is in the final stages of negotiations to move into an empty former Dominick's store in Chicago Heights.

The new grocery store will open in the 81,000-square-foot store at the northeast corner of Lincoln Highway and Western Avenue by the end of 2010, according to store real estate manager Mamie Yee.

The store had been expected to open sometime this year, but Food 4 Less was delayed in its lease negotiations with Dominick's, Yee said.

Aunt Martha's breaks ground on Chicago Heights dental clinic

Posted on 2009-10-07 10:07:42 CDT

Ground was broken Monday on a project that will expand dental services for the needy in Chicago Heights and other nearby suburbs.

The dental clinic, which will cost between $500,000 and $600,000, is being built at the Women's Health Center, 233 W. Joe Orr Road. The center is part of Aunt Martha's Healthcare Network.

Federal economic stimulus money and an $180,000 grant secured by U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-2nd), of Chicago, will pay for the project.

Mayor Alex Lopez praised Aunt Martha's, calling the non-profit agency something the city needs most.

"Especially in this time where there's a battle in Washington D.C. about health care reform, Aunt Martha's provides it to families that need it the most," Lopez said. "Dental is one of those coverages that is always put on the back burner. It's something every family needs."
